What Do We Know About Coronavirus?

Coronavirus Maps and Data is a blog that collects and lists useful data collections and maps related to the pandemic. There is a focus on Wisconsin data initially, but other locales will be added as time permits.

Data about the status of the outbreak currently and over time is an indicator of how well it is being controlled and where we need to focus more resources. Until we know the details, the big picture remains a mystery. For example, here is the list of top outbreak statictics for Wisconsin posted on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (WDHS) on April 16, 2020.

Wisconsin COVID-19 summary
StatusNumber (%) of People as of 4/16/2020
Negative Test Results40,974
Positive Test Results3,875
Hospitalizations1,121 (29%)
Deaths197

These are just big scary numbers without context.

Another way to view these statistics is by county, where the cases in each county are represented by a circle symbol sized relative to the number of cases.

This map from the WDHS is much more useful for determining where the virus is most active.

Over the coming days and weeks, I will be adding additional maps and data visualizations with the hope of clarifying what is a very scary situation and providing tools to help us discover ways to understand what is happening and where we  might make a difference for the better.
